What is Conjunctiva?

Many people hear their eye doctor in Miami Beach talk about their conjunctiva when they come in for a visit, especially if they think they have pink eye. The conjunctiva is the clear membrane that covers the front of the eye and the inside of the eyelids, and it’s purpose is to prevent objects from getting into the back of the eye. It can become infected with bacteria or viruses, resulting in the condition known as conjunctivitis– or pinkeye. The conjunctiva is there to provide blood to the surface of the eye, and also to fight off infections from bacteria and other pathogens. People who think they are having problems with their conjunctiva need to make an appointment with their eye doctor in Miami Beach to have the problem addressed as soon as possible.

The Functions of the Conjunctiva

Those who are interested about this part of their eye are going to be told a number of things by their eye doctor in Miami if they ask about it. This part of the eye is a minor one, but it plays an important role in protecting the eyes.

● There are many blood vessels in the conjunctiva, which is why the eye becomes red when an injury occurs or a foreign object gets into the eye.

● The conjunctiva is responsible for secreting sticky mucins, which is what is supposed to keep tears attached to the surface of the eye.

● The conjunctiva can become irritated by many things– not just from bacteria and viruses.

● The conjunctiva covers the cornea, but it sometimes naturally moves over the sclera (the white part of the eye).

Addressing Problems With the Conjunctiva

People who think they may be having problems with their conjunctiva need to see their optometrist in Miami Beach as soon as possible. In most cases, issues with the conjunctiva will naturally heal themselves over a day or two. However, if a problem is persisting for more than two days, it’s important to be seen by an eye doctor to figure out what the problem is. Some patients may need to be prescribed special antibiotics or eye drops that can help them fight off the infection better than their body is naturally able to. An issue with the conjunctiva can become a problem if it’s left untreated for too long, and most of the issues surrounding this part of the eye result in pain and discomfort.
