How Often Should I Get An Eye Exam?

eye exam

When was your last comprehensive eye exam? Having your eyes examined at least once per year is one of the most effective steps you can take to make sure your vision remains in top form.

During an exam, your eye doctor professional examines your eyes, keeping an eye out for commonly occurring eye diseases and vision issues, many of which have no early warning symptoms.

What Happens At An Eye Exam

1) Your examination starts with a visual acuity test through the use of an eye chart to assess your vision at several different distances. The exterior of your eye will also be assessed.

2) Your optometrist will place drops on the surfaces of your eyes. This dilates your pupils to help carry out the thorough internal exam of your eyes. You’ll then wait 20 to 30 minutes for the drops to take effect. Then, a magnifying instrument is used to examine inside your eye, including your retina. This is very important, as it will provide necessary information about the state of your eye health, as well as information about your general health. To give an example, it can show warning signs of diabetes and also point to unhealthy blood pressure.

It’s important to note that your pupils will continue to be dilated until after the eye drops have worn off, making your eyes quite light-sensitive, so take a pair of sunglasses with you to minimize light and glare when you leave.

3) You will be screened for signs of glaucoma. This is done by determining your eye pressure, using a rapid puff of air directed onto the eye.

Anytime is the right time to take the extra measure for your vision. Commit to making your eye health a priority, and book an examination today.
