5 Health Issues Related To Eyelashes

Many people ask their eye doctors about the functional purpose of their eyelashes. Your eyelashes continue to grow and shed over the years, but they play a crucial role in protecting your eyes.

They are present to keep minor irritants out of your eyes, such as dust, debris, sand, or dirt. They also let you know when to shut your eyes. For example, if something comes in contact with your lashes too forcefully, the natural reaction is to close your eyelids right away.

Potential Eyelash Problems

Most people never have to deal with any sort of health issues related to their eyelashes, but there are potential issues that can cause pain and discomfort. Here are just some of the conditions our eye doctor in Miami Beach sees regarding patients’ eyelashes:

1) Blepharitis

A condition in which the area of the eyelid that connects to the eyelashes becomes irritated, often resulting in eyelashes that fall out prematurely.

2) Trichiasis

The development of an ingrown eyelash, very similar to an ingrown hair on another part of the body.

3) Distichiasis

This is where a patient grows too many eyelashes on a certain portion of their eyelid.

4) Trichotillomania

More of a psychological condition, but it’s when a patients feel the urge to pull out their eyelashes and sometimes other hair on their body.

5) Madarosis

This is simply the medical term for someone who is losing their eyelashes, but the cause may be from another condition.

Caring For Your Eyelashes

It’s common for women to style their eyelashes and use makeup to make their eyes appear more vibrant, which is normally okay. However, the chemicals present in eyelash products are not meant to get inside the eyes. If you use too much product and it gets in your eyes, it’s possible to result in serious vision problems over time.

If you feel like your vision is becoming diminished because of eyelash products, make an appointment with your optometrist as soon as possible. There are plenty of alternative, chemical-free makeup products that can prevent health issues. If you don’t put any makeup products on your eyelashes, you most likely don’t need to do anything to care for them.
