Sunglasses look good, plain and simple. They’re fashionable and add flair to any outfit. But they also do something much more important — Protect your eyes from UV ray damage.
If you live in the Miami Beach area, sunglasses are a necessity since the sun is blazing year-round. Still, there are many who avoid wearing them.
If you’re one of those people, here are four reasons you should start wearing sunglasses:
1) Roughly 20% of people develop cataracts from overexposure to UV rays. Sunglasses block the sun and prevent the development of cataracts.
2) Sunglasses keep UV rays from damaging the retina, which helps prevent macular degeneration. That’s why your eyes feel more relaxed when you wear sunglasses. Your retina isn’t straining as much!
3) Sunglasses can prevent pterygium, which is a growth tissue that shows up on the white part of the eyeball. Pterygium can lead to over-curvature of the eye and cause vision problems like astigmatism.
4) Sunglasses will limit squinting and eye strain and help you avoid general eye damage. If your eyes get watery or easily strained in the sunlight (especially if your eyes are blue), you need to start weaning sunglasses consistently.
